There are no long-term dangers to the diabetic patients who have a moderate alcohol intake, but the incidences of cancer, hypertension, and symptomatic neuropathy as well as total mortality are increased with heavy alcohol. in addition, to avoid hypoglycemic complications, alcohol should be taken with a meal. Consequently, alcohol must be avoided if the patient shows evidence of neuropathy, pancreatitis, unstable diabetes with frequent hypoglycemic reactions, impotence, hypertrigly ceridemia or has a history of alcohol abuse. The prudent use of alcohol requires integrating alcohol- derived calories into the diet and avoiding excessive intake.
